Carrying while Black

I am an everyday carrier of a firearm.  I carry one from the time I'm dressed, till it's time for bed.  I carry everywhere that's legal.  Sometimes I ask myself, how will I handle a defensive situation when the only witnesses are White and they have no idea what led up to the incident. I make no qualms about being a Black Man with a Gun, I just wonder what it will be like if the SHTF in a public place and I'm the one there standing there holding a weapon.  In normal settings when I'm CC'ing, I'm cool when public areas because sometimes I often forget I'm carrying.  In a life or death switching from yellow to red can become dramatic and hectic.  I wonder how the story will be told when everything is said and done.  What about you?

Ya -- this is difficult.  The only thing I can think of is that you we should practice using verbal commands like, "drop the gun," and "don't hurt me!"

Not only might they work to control the attacker but they establish victimhood and facts pertaining to the incident.  For example, saying, "drop the gun," will imprint the fact that you are the victim and that the other guy had a gun.

So when the police interview witnesses they might, for example, say,  "the black guy shouted 'drop the gun' before the shooting started."

I make it a point to practice letting everyone know that I am the victim and to be sure that there are at least people who heard me being the victim, no matter how the situation is playing out.  Hopefully the tearful praying for the deceased when the police arrive will also work in my favor.  I also have some lawyers and a couple of cops that I can call in the event that I do have to use my weapon who would come to the scene for me.

When in public I tend to make plenty of eye contact in small settings.  If wearing a cap, I always leave it so people can see my face.  I'm pretty good at cc'ing , so I don't care about printing or if i have an accidental grip slip.  I know if involved in an incident to take retreat and take cover.  Massad Ayoob teaches to stay close to scene to protect evidence that might prove my innocence. Aside from making it known to the casual witness that you were the victim, how do you things will go down if someone else is carrying and sees you?.   Better yet, the badguy is white????

Those are good questions...I, like you Trigger, try to make eye contact and speak to most people I encounter.  A smile goes a long way, even if it simply tells you whether the person is hot or cold towards you.

Unforunately race might play a deciding factor in you going or not going to jail. I often wonder what will happen if I get into a confrontantion with a white guy and something "pop" off whose story are they going to believe his or mines. Now in the state of Va particulary  in Alex, City where if you have a ccw permit you are considered very, very lucky because they do not issue them out often and if you are of color you are usually denied one. I definitely agree with the Bro.Triggerman is that Ialso try to make eye contact in public places and definitely do not leave the scene of the crime. We as black gun owners are still under the globe of suspicion simply because of who we are and the fact that we are still looked upon as a criminal.

I agree triggerman and bersablk; I wonder about the same thing. I wonder about sometimes what if the bad guy is white. I had a vehicle accident with a white woman a long time ago with no witnesses and she hit me from behind and when the white policeman showed up guess who story they beleived. Thats right, hers and the idiot even gave me a ticket. I just hope I'm never in a situation where I have to use my weapon. If I am I'll just call my lawyer and pray everything turns out right.

bersablk9 if you are a man of color in Virginia you don't have to feel lucky. All you have to do is apply for a Florida concealed carry permit. Virginia has a reciprocity agreement
with the state of Florida so they have to honor your permit.  I carry 50 bullets on me every time I set foot in Virginia.

50 bullets, I somewhat agree BUT I like the option of Open carry. Can you guys carry on public transportation? In restarants that serve alcohol ?

jmj2,

I rarely OC  but you make a good point.  I see mandatory concealment as a major infringement of the 2nd.  Even if FL allows carry most anywhere, it is a violation.

I believe even printing or a quick flash of the grip can lead to an arrest in Florida.

If I am not mistaken, you are correct...how ridiculous is that?

Legal and lawfully are two totally opposed beings. When state and county municipalities get people used to "color of law" you'd be not be surprised what they'll do.It's generational and cyclical future primitive
gentlemen.
